AfroReggae is responsible for some great work within Rio’s disadvantaged communities, and it is also known for using art as a tool for social transformation. One of the organization’s cultural ventures, Afro Circo, premieres its new show, dubbed “Genesis”, which mixes dance, music and circus skills to tell the story of human evolution starting from the dark mythology of the Yoruba. The free performances take place on Saturdays and Sundays until July 21st, at Anfiteatro Benjamim de Oliveira, one of AfroReggae’s satellites, in Cantagalo, Ipanema.
“Genesis” tells the story of the creation of the world from the perspective of the Yoruba belief, which influenced Brazilian religions like Candomblé. Legend goes that Olorun (God) created the universe, and that the deities, in celebration, created all things and humans beings. It’s a cultural journey that bridges the gap between Brazil and Africa.
26 artists who are also residents of local communities and participants in some of AfroReggae’s projects will take to the stage. "To be a circus artist, one must be free to run around the streets barefoot. It’s all about living without any strings attached. The idea was to bring the aesthetic of the slums to the show, and I believe that these young people bring that touch to the show", says director of the show, Marcelo Silveira.
This aesthetic is present not only in the actors’ performances, but also in the soundtrack, which features songs from rappers Criolo and MV Bill. Caetano Veloso and Tom Jobim are also part of the list of composers chosen for the show. The set design and costumes were produced in AfroReggae’s workshops, where the reuse of recyclable materials is taught. The result is evident during performances, when all elements are put together to created a unique and impactful effect.
