After 18 years, Império da Tijuca will parade alongside Special Group schools once more in 2014. The samba school from Morro da Formiga, in Rio’s North Side, became the first champion for newly created Group A, with 300.0 points. “Carnavalesco” Junior Pernambucano was in charge of a Marquês de Sapucaí parade for the first time, and his debut impressed the jurors, due mostly to the sophistication of the floats and costumes.

Their themed-samba, "Negra, Pérola mulher", a tribute to black women, proved to be the perfect choice. It was a decisive element, contributing to the success of the parade. Império’s “carnavalesco” explored the elements of African culture to perfection, especially in regards to the Brazilian gods of Camdomblé, dubbed orishas.

Major samba schools like Viradouro and Império Serrano had great parades as well. These schools got second and third place, respectively.

Three samba schools were relegated to Group B: Sereno de Campo Grande, Unidos do Jacarezinho and Unidos da Vila Santa Tereza.
