The city of Rio de Janeiro is the host for this catholic event in 2013. More than two million young people are
expected for the World Youth Day (WYD). There are many new elements in this year’s edition of JMJ. One of them is a huge “Stations of the Cross” pilgrimage, taking place at Copacabana Beach, on July 26th.
The path will be set from Copacabana Palace to Leme, with the distinguished presence of Pope Francis and more than 14 staircases surrounding Atlântica Avenue. More than 700 volunteers, as well as famous actors, will be representing the characters at the stations.
Pilgrims of various nationalities will be carrying the cross. The pilgrimage is directed by Ulysses Cruz, and set design is by Abel Gomes.

“Rio de Imagens” at MAR

“Rio de Imagens” at MAR
Several different artists create a realistic portrait of the city



“Rio de Imagens” exhibit features pieces by Burle Marx, Iberê Camargo, Di Cavalcanti and Lasar Segall, to name only a few. The showcase is on display through July 28th at Rio’s Art Museum (MAR), creating a realistic portrait of the city through art. The pieces were created by artists focused on different styles and they include around 60 paintings, prints and panels, from the early 19th century to present day.

This exhibit, set up at MAR’s entry point, tells a constantly changing story, inspired by maps dating from 1700 and previously untouched watercolors and prints of Rio, all of which merge into historical documents and recent slums photographs. Tarsila do Amaral, Eliseu Visconti, Carlito Carvalhosa, Mauricio Dias & Walter Riedweg and Milton Dacosta are only a few of the great names that tell the history of a city that continues to grow, in an exhibit that helps us find its roots and trace its future.

Most pieces are not well known by the general public, as many of them belong to personal collections. The exhibition features Rio de Janeiro as seen by different forms and aesthetics. The highlights are three multimedia installations that help visitors imagine the city in its historical and affective dimensions.
