The vocation of Rio de Janeiro for the practice of sports is clear. There are several beaches and lagoons to be discovered as well as peaks and mountains to be reached. And to move your body, just choose your activity and go on around the city playing sports. Along this path, two modalities stand up: The Stand up paddle and Kitesurfing.

The history of Stand up paddle blends with the roots of surfing in Hawaii. And just over three years this practice invaded the beaches of Rio and gained strong practitioners last season. Practitioners can be seen in posto 6, in Copacabana, at Barra Beach or even at Rodrigo de Freitas Lagoon. The sport that mixes surfing and rowing is a good option for those that don’t want to venture into the waves without a support, or even for regular surfers looking for a lighter and more relaxing exercise.

And for the surfboard adventurers, Kitesurfing gives wings to the most daring maneuvers. The spot is at Barrinha, near the Pepê Kiosk, which offers a nice structure for beginners and professionals, since besides the kitesurfing schools there is also support boat, pump to inflate the kites and a place to store equipment,as well as good options to recharge the energies.

Bruno Ribas and Bruno Sales take over the party

Lapa is a party spot, no matter which day of the week. Every Tuesday, Favellas samba venue hosts Buteco the Brunos. This is an especially made evening for lovers of samba and MBB (Good Brazilian Music). Don’t miss this chance to sing along and dance to classics of the genre.

Bruno Ribas and Bruno Sales are in charge of the fun. Bruno Ribas was part of Tia Doca band and is the nephew of singer Reinaldo, known as the Prince of the Pagode. Bruno Sales is a samba singer for Unidos da Tijuca samba school.

Strike and HotZone at Barra Shopping

Are you a fan of adrenaline? Barra Shopping is one of the largest shopping centers in town, where a number of attractions for children and adolescents are available, allowing parents to go shopping, go to the movies or dine in one of the many restaurants. HotZone is a 350 arcade game and rides area, including a bowling alley called Striker, which features 20 lanes.

HotZone also has also made new additions to its rides, like the Twister Coaster, a version of the American 570 feet roller coaster, featuring 9 feet tall curves and slopes. The Tower is a 40 feet high free fall ride, with turning chairs. Xrider is a 4D simulator, and traditional toys like a carousel and arcade games are also part of the fun.

Stricker’s many lanes are set up in a space big enough for a thousand people, and it also has pool tables. The American style Diner features fast food and Brazilian bar food.

Flashback Party at Nuth

10 years on and still livening up Mondays in Barra

Confounding those who think Monday is a night to stay at home, Nuth Lounge continues to tempt hundreds onto the dancefloor.  The night club, in Barra da Tijuca, uses the classic sounds of the ‘70s, ‘80s and ‘90s as the formula for this 10 year success story.  Young and old alike mix at the Flashback party, amongst them both loyal regulars and new visitors, united in their celebration of the sound of pop, disco, house and dance.

Bernard Castejá has been the resident DJ since the beginning, and is the main reason for the ongoing success of a party where no-one stands still on a Monday night.  The party kicks off at 8:30pm and winds down at 4am, with entrance priced at R$30 for women and R$40 for men.

Worker’s Samba at Clube Renascença

Samba Circle to start off the week

A group of samba dancers decided to get together at Clube Renascença, in Tijuca, and get the week started on a good note. Worker’s Samba is a circle dedicated to all workers and to those looking to relax on Mondays, even though they might not even have to take on the entire work week. But the schedule is not conducive to working hours: it starts at 4.30 pm and ends at 9pm. However, during those five hours of samba, the audience gets to hear quality samba, lead by Moacyr Luz, and also to enjoy some good barbecue.

Samba circle shakes up Lapa on Monday nights

Richahs is considered to be samba’s Pavarotti, and is now in charge on Monday samba circle at Carioca da Gema, at Lapa. His low and melodic voice has set the tone for some incredible evenings at Sapucaí for samba schools like Império Serrano, and is now rocking the night away with sambas, pagode and some very familiar tunes by carioca samba schools. Entry for the event is R$21.
