Free Amazon exhibit at Rio's Botanical Garden

"The Amazon is ours. Should we be approaching its wonders with a sense of power or a sense of wonder? "- Jacques Cousteau

World renowned oceanographer Jacques Cousteau was known especially for his long exploratory trips around the world, where he cataloged and studied different species throughout the five oceans."Regresso à Amazônia" exhibit brings together thirty photographs taken during Cousteau's son recent trip to the Amazon.Jean Michel Cousteau, curator of the showcase, sought to present changes that occurred during the 25 years between the original Cousteau expedition, conducted in 1982, and his new venture.

Visionary and trailblazer, Jacques Cousteau traveled the 4225 miles of the Amazon with a team of 50 people 30 years ago. His son also came along in the adventure, which included travels through earth, water and earth. Twenty-five years later, Jean Michel embarked on the same path with his children, and photographer Carrie Vonderhaaar, author of the thirty images displayed at the Visitor Center of the Botanical Garden.

"The focus of this expedition was to observe the changes in the region and the accuracy of the previously made predictions. Unfortunately it was much worse than anticipated, mainly with respect to the amount of fish lost and deforestation that took place. The exhibit aims to clarify questions asked by Jacques Cousteau, to showcase the beauty of this extremely rich region and to invoke our responsibility to preserve the environment", state the exhibit organizers.

Maracanã will host not just the three games of the Confederations Cup but also the WorldCup and the Olympic Games

Maracanã will host not just the three games of the Confederations Cup but also the WorldCup and the Olympic Games

In the golden period of the Brazilian national team, which won three world titles between 1958 and 1970, the writer Nelson Rodrigues coined the term ‘a pátria de chuteiras’ (‘the country in football boots’). He was describing the way Brazilian people resonate, dream, curse and just plain live football. The 11 players who take to the field in the yellow shirt represent a nation of millions, and while the ball is in play those millions of people become one heart beating only for the national side. It’s in football that Brazilians become more Brazilian, showing the world how a sport can have such importance and be such a passion for us.

This passion will be put to the test in June, when six Brazilian cities host the matches of the Confederations Cup. One of them, of course, is Rio. Three games will take place at the newly renovated Maracanã, including the final. Something of a test run for the 2014 World Cup, the Confederations Cup brings together the current world champions, the host country, and the current holders of each continental championship. Brazil, Spain, Italy, Mexico and Uruguay are the stars, while in the role of underdogs are Japan, Tahiti and Nigeria. Together they make up a competition that, after 16 games of football, will crown a new champion.

FIFA’s Confederations Cup began in 1992, in Saudi Arabia, and since 2001 its been happening in its present form - always taking place in the country hosting the next World Cup, and always the year before the World Cup. In 2013 there are eight teams divided into two groups.Brazil, which has won the Confederations Cup three times, heads up a group that also includes Mexico, Italy and Japan.

Meanwhile Spain, current world champions, will be fighting it out with Nigeria, Tahiti and Uruguay in the search for a further addition to the trophy cabinet. Cariocas and visitors will be able to see one match from each group, with the Maracanã hosting Mexico versus Italy on 16th June and Spain versus Tahiti on the 20th - as well as the final of the whole competition on June 30th. Brasília, Fortaleza, Recife, Belo Horizonte and Salvador are the other host cities. Brazil’s group matches take place in Brasília and Fortaleza. But if fair winds favour the canarinho (‘little canary’), as the national team is known, Rio’s Maracaãcould be the setting in which Brazil wins another title.

Free performances to take place in Cantagalo community

Free performances to take place in Cantagalo
community

AfroReggae is responsible for some great work within Rio’s disadvantaged communities, and it is also known for using art as a tool for social transformation. One of the organization’s cultural ventures, Afro Circo, premieres its new show, dubbed “Genesis”, which mixes dance, music and circus skills to tell the story of human evolution starting from the dark mythology of the Yoruba. The free performances take place on Saturdays and Sundays until July 21st, at Anfiteatro Benjamim de Oliveira, one of AfroReggae’s satellites, in Cantagalo, Ipanema.

“Genesis” tells the story of the creation of the world from the perspective of the Yoruba belief, which influenced Brazilian religions like Candomblé. Legend goes that Olorun (God) created the universe, and that the deities, in celebration, created all things and humans beings. It’s a cultural journey that bridges the gap between Brazil and Africa.

26 artists who are also residents of local communities and participants in some of AfroReggae’s projects will take to the stage. "To be a circus artist, one must be free to run around the streets barefoot. It’s all about living without any strings attached. The idea was to bring the aesthetic of the slums to the show, and I believe that these young people bring that touch to the show", says director of the show, Marcelo Silveira.

This aesthetic is present not only in the actors’ performances, but also in the soundtrack, which features songs from rappers Criolo and MV Bill. Caetano Veloso and Tom Jobim are also part of the list of composers chosen for the show. The set design and costumes were produced in AfroReggae’s workshops, where the reuse of recyclable materials is taught. The result is evident during performances, when all elements are put together to created a unique and impactful effect.

Project created to facilitate access to Christ the Redeemer

In order to facilitate access to Christ the Redeemer, one the Seven Wonders of the Modern World, tickets to the Corcovado Train are now available online, at www.corcovado.com.br or at Riotur’s Tourist Information Office at Rua Candelaria, in Downtown Rio.

Another way to get to the famous statue of Christ is the new van service made available by the city hall. The vans depart from Largo do Machado and head straight to the monument of Christ the Redeemer. As announced last month, the purchase of tickets for the train directly at Cosme Velho station will no longer be available. The train can transport up to 300 passengers per hour. For visitors who choose to take their car or get there by taxi, tickets must also be purchased in advance, as the sales spot at Hotel Paineiras will no longer be active. This previous sales spot, located at Estrada das Paineiras, will now work solely as an exchange office were vouchers can be handed in for tickets to the monument.

On top of Corcovado, within Tijuca National Park, the view of several areas of Rio de Janeiro is one of the reasons why this touristic spot is so famous. The main reason can be found atop Corcovado Mountain: the largest and most famous Art Deco sculpture in world, the statue of Christ the Redeemer. The statue is one of Rio’s main sights, voted as one of the Seven Wonders of the World by Swiss organization New 7 Wonders Foundation. 21 monuments took part in the voting process, and seven were elected throughout the planet.
