Rio gain a new museum

detalhe

Rio de Janeiro could not have gotten a better birthday present. Cariocas and tourists now have another cultural event to attend. Museu de Artes do Rio (MAR), Rio de Janeiro’s Art Museum, opens its doors with four simultaneous exhibits, gathered in 160 thousand square feet, at Praça Maua, bringing together a collection that spans from Aleijadinho to Tarsila do Amaral.

MAR is the first major cultural space at Praça Mauá built within the project of revitalization of the Port Area. Rio de Janeiro is to be the museum’s a main exhibit theme. The showrooms are spread over four floors of the Dom João VI mansion, a heritage site decorated in an eclectic style. Each floor of the mansion will be focused on a different theme.

The public will have access to the small palace through the annex building, by crossing a bridge that will lead to the top floor, which connects the building to Escola do Olhar, at Palace of Dom João VI. The first exhibit is dubbed “Rio de Imagens: Uma Paisagem em Construção”, which brings together around 400 pieces, and shows the evolution of the city over four centuries.

“O Colecionador : Arte Brasileira e Internacional na coleção“ exhibit, located on the second floor, features 136 pieces from art dealer Jean Boghici‘s private collection. The showcase creates a mosaic of Rio de Janeiro’s art and history in the 20th century, including pieces by Di Cavalcanti, Brecheret, Guignard, Kandinsky, and around 70 more artists.

“Vontade Construtiva na Coleção Fadel“, on the first floor, includes around 230 pieces. This exhibit aims to show a significant and historic collection of works produced by Brazilian plastic artists from the concrete and neo-concrete movement, from the 1950s and 1960. The exhibit also features pieces from the MAR collection, acquired or donated recently, such as São José de Botas , by Aleijadinho.

On the top floor of, exhibit “O Abrigo e o Terreno - Arte de Sociedade no Brasil” hopes to explore inclusion and exclusion relations in an urban context through the works of Antonio Dias, Antonio Manuel, Bispo do Rosario, Helio Oiticica, Lucia Koch, Lygia Clark, Lygia Pape, Marepe, Raul Mourao, and many more.

The cultural area includes eight showrooms divided over four floors in a 43 thousand square feet area. Escola do Olhar, (former Civil Police Hospital) is the headquarters of MAR’s educational program and the gateway to the Museum. The museum also includes part of the old Bus Station at Praca Maua.
