Rio gain a new museum

detalhe

Rio de Janeiro could not have gotten a better birthday present. Cariocas and tourists now have another cultural event to attend. Museu de Artes do Rio (MAR), Rio de Janeiro’s Art Museum, opens its doors with four simultaneous exhibits, gathered in 160 thousand square feet, at Praça Maua, bringing together a collection that spans from Aleijadinho to Tarsila do Amaral.

MAR is the first major cultural space at Praça Mauá built within the project of revitalization of the Port Area. Rio de Janeiro is to be the museum’s a main exhibit theme. The showrooms are spread over four floors of the Dom João VI mansion, a heritage site decorated in an eclectic style. Each floor of the mansion will be focused on a different theme.

The public will have access to the small palace through the annex building, by crossing a bridge that will lead to the top floor, which connects the building to Escola do Olhar, at Palace of Dom João VI. The first exhibit is dubbed “Rio de Imagens: Uma Paisagem em Construção”, which brings together around 400 pieces, and shows the evolution of the city over four centuries.

“O Colecionador : Arte Brasileira e Internacional na coleção“ exhibit, located on the second floor, features 136 pieces from art dealer Jean Boghici‘s private collection. The showcase creates a mosaic of Rio de Janeiro’s art and history in the 20th century, including pieces by Di Cavalcanti, Brecheret, Guignard, Kandinsky, and around 70 more artists.

“Vontade Construtiva na Coleção Fadel“, on the first floor, includes around 230 pieces. This exhibit aims to show a significant and historic collection of works produced by Brazilian plastic artists from the concrete and neo-concrete movement, from the 1950s and 1960. The exhibit also features pieces from the MAR collection, acquired or donated recently, such as São José de Botas , by Aleijadinho.

On the top floor of, exhibit “O Abrigo e o Terreno - Arte de Sociedade no Brasil” hopes to explore inclusion and exclusion relations in an urban context through the works of Antonio Dias, Antonio Manuel, Bispo do Rosario, Helio Oiticica, Lucia Koch, Lygia Clark, Lygia Pape, Marepe, Raul Mourao, and many more.

The cultural area includes eight showrooms divided over four floors in a 43 thousand square feet area. Escola do Olhar, (former Civil Police Hospital) is the headquarters of MAR’s educational program and the gateway to the Museum. The museum also includes part of the old Bus Station at Praca Maua.

Their themed-samba, "Negra, Pérola mulher", was a delight to all

detalhe

After 18 years, Império da Tijuca will parade alongside Special Group schools once more in 2014. The samba school from Morro da Formiga, in Rio’s North Side, became the first champion for newly created Group A, with 300.0 points. “Carnavalesco” Junior Pernambucano was in charge of a Marquês de Sapucaí parade for the first time, and his debut impressed the jurors, due mostly to the sophistication of the floats and costumes.

Their themed-samba, "Negra, Pérola mulher", a tribute to black women, proved to be the perfect choice. It was a decisive element, contributing to the success of the parade. Império’s “carnavalesco” explored the elements of African culture to perfection, especially in regards to the Brazilian gods of Camdomblé, dubbed orishas.

Major samba schools like Viradouro and Império Serrano had great parades as well. These schools got second and third place, respectively.

Three samba schools were relegated to Group B: Sereno de Campo Grande, Unidos do Jacarezinho and Unidos da Vila Santa Tereza.

The samba school from Noel neighborhood thrilled the audiences with their rural workers themed samba

detalhe

The victory by Unidos de Vila Isabel, the new Special Group 2013 champion, was celebrated by all. The school from Noel neighborhood thrilled the audiences with their themed samba, which told the life story of a Brazilian farmer. Their samba beat was an anthological one, created by André Diniz, Martinho da Vila, Arlindo Cruz, Tunico da Vila and Leonel. This is the third championship won by Vila Isabel, including 1988’s victory, with "Kizomba, a festa da raça" and 2006’s title, "Soy Loco por ti, América. A Vila Canta a Latinidade".

Aesthetically, Vila Isabel had the brilliance of “canavalesca” Rosa Magalhães on its side. She is the greatest champion in the history of samba, now with eight titles in her résumé. It was Rosa’s good taste that won the audiences over, along with the jurors. All components were also motivated and organized, with amazing performances in terms of clean singing and parade evolution. The “mestre-sala” and “porta-bandeira” couple (Julinho and Rute Alves), also got a perfect score.

History of Rio de Janeiro

The city is mentioned officially for the first time when the second Portuguese exploratory expedition, commanded by Gaspar Lemos, arrived in January, 1502, at the bay, which the seafarer assumed understandably that it was the mouth of a river, thus giving the name to region of Rio de Janeiro (River of January).
However, only in 1530 did the Portuguese court send an expedition to colonize the area, rather than continuing using it simply as a stop on their maritime adventures. The French, on the other hand, had been in and around Rio de Janeiro since the beginning of the century and were willing to fight for dominance in the region. In 1560, after a series of skirmishes, the Portuguese drove the French away.
The beginning of the city as it was in the Hill of São Januário, later known as Castle Hill, and then today at Praça Quinze (Square 15) until today it is the vital center of Rio de Janeiro.

Rio de Janeiro has developed thanks to its natural vocation as a port. At the same time when gold has been discovered in Minas Gerais in the late seventeenth century, the governor of Brazil was made Viceroy. Salvador was the capital of the colony, but the growing importance of the port of Rio secured the transfer of seat of power to the South, to the city which would become and still is the intellectual and cultural center of the country.

In 1808 the Portuguese royal family came to Rio de Janeiro, refuge chosen for the threat of Napoleonic invasion. When the royal family returned to Portugal and Brazil's Independence was declared in 1822, the gold mines had already been exhausted and had given way to another treasure: coffee.

The growth had continued throughout most of the nineteenth century, initially in the north to São Cristóvão and Tijuca, and then toward the south zone, through Gloria, Flamengo, and Botafogo districts. In 1889, the capital of the Empire saw the fall of the monarchy. Political changes followed the capitalist guidelines. The transition from Monarchy to Republic began in 1889 and it was only over, in fact, in 1930. The city, with the proclamation of the Republic, became the federal capital.

In the early twentieth century the wide streets and imposing buildings came up, mostly in the French fin-de-siècle style. Rio de Janeiro held its position until the inauguration of Brasília as the capital of the republic in 1960. As Capital of the State of Rio de Janeiro, the city remains the cultural and social center of the country.

XVIII, when he was the main port to drain the gold brought from Minas Gerais. Squeezed between the sea and mountains, still retains the typical houses of that time in the Historic Center, consisting of preserved colonial mansions, churches of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries by slaves and streets paved in stone-feet boy, where automobile traffic is prohibited . But while circulating through the alleys of the historic center, tourists have a pleasant surprise. Charming inns, lively bars and restaurants run by celebrity chefs combine the tradition of what is best in terms of tourism. It is there that happen to FLIP - Paraty International Literary Festival and the Festival da Pinga, most known events in the city.

A stroll around Angra should start, no doubt, by the sea. Diving is simply irresistible at the beauty of the sea. With many shipwrecks and abundant marine life, the Angra Bay is one of the best places to dive in the southeastern coast, even for amateurs. A traditional maritime procession on the first day of the year is one of the biggest events in the city.

The Big Island, largest island, is also the most famous: they are 86 beaches scattered across its 190 square miles. To get there faces are about 1 hour boat ride from the port of Angra. Just over 170 km away from the river separating one of the most popular beaches of Brazil, Armação dos Búzios - Búzios or just for the 8 km íntimos.A peninsula surrounded by islands and beaches gained city status in 1995, but worldwide fame came long before that, when he was just a district of Cabo Frio. The simple fishing village was never the same after the visit of French actress Brigitte Bardot, in 1964, drawing worldwide attention to the beaches there. The passion was mutual and muse of European cinema baptizes not only cinema but also the city's seaside promenade, named Orla Bardot, where there is a bronze statue of natural size of his most famous poster girl.

The coast of Buzios has beaches for all tastes and styles. In Geribá reign surfers and climate jinx; already Joao Fernandes and Joao Fernandinho are preferred by foreigners. Who will search for tranquility Azedinha, while entire families are attracted to the calmer waters of Horseshoe. A quick and enjoyable way to learn them all is to make a boat trip through the region, including islands and Ugly Rasa, where dips are made.

There are several beaches and lagoons to be discovered

The vocation of Rio de Janeiro for the practice of sports is clear. There are several beaches and lagoons to be discovered as well as peaks and mountains to be reached. And to move your body, just choose your activity and go on around the city playing sports. Along this path, two modalities stand up: The Stand up paddle and Kitesurfing.

The history of Stand up paddle blends with the roots of surfing in Hawaii. And just over three years this practice invaded the beaches of Rio and gained strong practitioners last season. Practitioners can be seen in posto 6, in Copacabana, at Barra Beach or even at Rodrigo de Freitas Lagoon. The sport that mixes surfing and rowing is a good option for those that don’t want to venture into the waves without a support, or even for regular surfers looking for a lighter and more relaxing exercise.

And for the surfboard adventurers, Kitesurfing gives wings to the most daring maneuvers. The spot is at Barrinha, near the Pepê Kiosk, which offers a nice structure for beginners and professionals, since besides the kitesurfing schools there is also support boat, pump to inflate the kites and a place to store equipment,as well as good options to recharge the energies.
