Free Amazon exhibit at Rio's Botanical Garden

Free Amazon exhibit at Rio's Botanical Garden

"The Amazon is ours. Should we be approaching its wonders with a sense of power or a sense of wonder? "- Jacques Cousteau

World renowned oceanographer Jacques Cousteau was known especially for his long exploratory trips around the world, where he cataloged and studied different species throughout the five oceans."Regresso à Amazônia" exhibit brings together thirty photographs taken during Cousteau's son recent trip to the Amazon.Jean Michel Cousteau, curator of the showcase, sought to present changes that occurred during the 25 years between the original Cousteau expedition, conducted in 1982, and his new venture.

Visionary and trailblazer, Jacques Cousteau traveled the 4225 miles of the Amazon with a team of 50 people 30 years ago. His son also came along in the adventure, which included travels through earth, water and earth. Twenty-five years later, Jean Michel embarked on the same path with his children, and photographer Carrie Vonderhaaar, author of the thirty images displayed at the Visitor Center of the Botanical Garden.

"The focus of this expedition was to observe the changes in the region and the accuracy of the previously made predictions. Unfortunately it was much worse than anticipated, mainly with respect to the amount of fish lost and deforestation that took place. The exhibit aims to clarify questions asked by Jacques Cousteau, to showcase the beauty of this extremely rich region and to invoke our responsibility to preserve the environment", state the exhibit organizers.

Maracanã will host not just the three games of the Confederations Cup but also the WorldCup and the Olympic Games

Foto: Fernando Maia

Maracanã will host not just the three games of the Confederations Cup but also the WorldCup and the Olympic Games

In the golden period of the Brazilian national team, which won three world titles between 1958 and 1970, the writer Nelson Rodrigues coined the term ‘a pátria de chuteiras’ (‘the country in football boots’). He was describing the way Brazilian people resonate, dream, curse and just plain live football. The 11 players who take to the field in the yellow shirt represent a nation of millions, and while the ball is in play those millions of people become one heart beating only for the national side. It’s in football that Brazilians become more Brazilian, showing the world how a sport can have such importance and be such a passion for us.

This passion will be put to the test in June, when six Brazilian cities host the matches of the Confederations Cup. One of them, of course, is Rio. Three games will take place at the newly renovated Maracanã, including the final. Something of a test run for the 2014 World Cup, the Confederations Cup brings together the current world champions, the host country, and the current holders of each continental championship. Brazil, Spain, Italy, Mexico and Uruguay are the stars, while in the role of underdogs are Japan, Tahiti and Nigeria. Together they make up a competition that, after 16 games of football, will crown a new champion.

FIFA’s Confederations Cup began in 1992, in Saudi Arabia, and since 2001 its been happening in its present form - always taking place in the country hosting the next World Cup, and always the year before the World Cup. In 2013 there are eight teams divided into two groups.Brazil, which has won the Confederations Cup three times, heads up a group that also includes Mexico, Italy and Japan.

Meanwhile Spain, current world champions, will be fighting it out with Nigeria, Tahiti and Uruguay in the search for a further addition to the trophy cabinet. Cariocas and visitors will be able to see one match from each group, with the Maracanã hosting Mexico versus Italy on 16th June and Spain versus Tahiti on the 20th - as well as the final of the whole competition on June 30th. Brasília, Fortaleza, Recife, Belo Horizonte and Salvador are the other host cities. Brazil’s group matches take place in Brasília and Fortaleza. But if fair winds favour the canarinho (‘little canary’), as the national team is known, Rio’s Maracaãcould be the setting in which Brazil wins another title.

Free performances to take place in Cantagalo community

Free performances to take place in Cantagalo
community

AfroReggae is responsible for some great work within Rio’s disadvantaged communities, and it is also known for using art as a tool for social transformation. One of the organization’s cultural ventures, Afro Circo, premieres its new show, dubbed “Genesis”, which mixes dance, music and circus skills to tell the story of human evolution starting from the dark mythology of the Yoruba. The free performances take place on Saturdays and Sundays until July 21st, at Anfiteatro Benjamim de Oliveira, one of AfroReggae’s satellites, in Cantagalo, Ipanema.

“Genesis” tells the story of the creation of the world from the perspective of the Yoruba belief, which influenced Brazilian religions like Candomblé. Legend goes that Olorun (God) created the universe, and that the deities, in celebration, created all things and humans beings. It’s a cultural journey that bridges the gap between Brazil and Africa.

26 artists who are also residents of local communities and participants in some of AfroReggae’s projects will take to the stage. "To be a circus artist, one must be free to run around the streets barefoot. It’s all about living without any strings attached. The idea was to bring the aesthetic of the slums to the show, and I believe that these young people bring that touch to the show", says director of the show, Marcelo Silveira.

This aesthetic is present not only in the actors’ performances, but also in the soundtrack, which features songs from rappers Criolo and MV Bill. Caetano Veloso and Tom Jobim are also part of the list of composers chosen for the show. The set design and costumes were produced in AfroReggae’s workshops, where the reuse of recyclable materials is taught. The result is evident during performances, when all elements are put together to created a unique and impactful effect.

Project created to facilitate access to Christ the Redeemer

In order to facilitate access to Christ the Redeemer, one the Seven Wonders of the Modern World, tickets to the Corcovado Train are now available online, at www.corcovado.com.br or at Riotur’s Tourist Information Office at Rua Candelaria, in Downtown Rio.

Another way to get to the famous statue of Christ is the new van service made available by the city hall. The vans depart from Largo do Machado and head straight to the monument of Christ the Redeemer. As announced last month, the purchase of tickets for the train directly at Cosme Velho station will no longer be available. The train can transport up to 300 passengers per hour. For visitors who choose to take their car or get there by taxi, tickets must also be purchased in advance, as the sales spot at Hotel Paineiras will no longer be active. This previous sales spot, located at Estrada das Paineiras, will now work solely as an exchange office were vouchers can be handed in for tickets to the monument.

On top of Corcovado, within Tijuca National Park, the view of several areas of Rio de Janeiro is one of the reasons why this touristic spot is so famous. The main reason can be found atop Corcovado Mountain: the largest and most famous Art Deco sculpture in world, the statue of Christ the Redeemer. The statue is one of Rio’s main sights, voted as one of the Seven Wonders of the World by Swiss organization New 7 Wonders Foundation. 21 monuments took part in the voting process, and seven were elected throughout the planet.

Homestays are a good option for visitors to Rio

Foto: Alexandre Macieira | Riotur

Homestays are a good option for visitors to Rio. A comfortable place to sleep, a good breakfast, and the famous Brazilian hospitality. This is the model for homestays in Rio de Janeiro, where there are around 300 host families with about 360 available rooms. In the concept of homestay, which originated in Europe, the visitor is a guest in the home of a local resident on a bed and breakfast basis. In the Zona Sul (South Zone of Rio) rates are between R$100 and R$200 a night, with some hosts including other benefits in the price.

Marcella Clarke, chief of operations at Cama e Café, one of the networks coordinating the homestay system, guarantees that all the homes are continually inspected and have to meet a series of criteria used to evaluate the quality of the accommodation. “To stay with someone who lives in the city gives you a level of comfort and security which just isn’t possible elsewhere,” she says. For Marcella the difference between staying in a hotel and in someone’s home lies in the warmth of your reception. “Hotels are a bit cold,” she declares. She also highlights the possibility of homestayers gaining an insight into the carioca lifestyle. “The contact the homestay guest has with the daily life of the city is amazing,” she says, “It’s a unique experience".

Loris Capogrossi, director of Bed & Breakfast Brasil -another group which organises homestays- emphasises the additional services offered by hosts. These give a professional touch to the system, he says – such as airport transfers to the homestay (charged as extra), and a range of other facilities: “Most of our homes offer Wi-Fi, cable TV, laundry, cleaning services, even parking,” he says.

Most residences offering homestays are to be found in the Zona Sul or Santa Teresa. But residents of Barra da Tijuca, the fastest growing part of the city, have begun to open their homes to the service. Marlúcia Pessoa, who lives in Joá, the neighbourhood between Barra da Tijuca and São Conrado, can see both the forest and the sea from her window. She already hosts unexpected visitors, such as marmosets and capybaras. It’s this which has motivated her to make a room in her house available to homestayers. “I live in such an out of the ordinary place, with such exuberant nature, that I want to share it with other people,” she explains.

The therapist says most of Rio’s hotels are in the Zona Sul, in neighbourhoods like Copacabana or Ipanema, and because of this not many tourists visit Barra. “I want to change that, and show people another side to the city,” she says. Marlúcia explains that she’s always loved to travel, and that welcoming people from all over the world into her home gives her the opportunity to get to know other cultures and share experiences. “It’s a pleasure to take my guests to places which are quite different to those they find in the guide books, to show them round the area where I’ve chosen to live,” she concludes, “When you stay in someone’s home, you end up knowing a lot more about the city.”

Artist Wanderley Figueiredo was amongst the first to open their doors to homestayers, some 11 years ago. For him, the secret to being a good host lies in the guest’s opportunity to identify with his lifestyle. “The homestay gains a special ingredient from the moment the visitor joins me in my daily life and opens up the possibility of getting to know the place more deeply,” he says. A resident of Santa Teresa, he says that even before he rented rooms in his house he was already used to putting up friends on a regular basis. “I like to host and I have a preoccupation with giving visitors the best possible impression of my city,” says Wanderley.

Luiz Olinto has worked in the tourism industry for 26 years, and has decided to start offering bed and breakfast. He was attracted by the possibility of gaining new knowledge and swapping experiences as much as the extra money. “I’ve travelled all over Brazil, which means I have some experience in this area,” he explains, “These days I host people from places such as New Zealand, Germany and France, which helps me to understand other cultures better.”

Owner of an apartment in the heart of Copacabana, the tourism professional joined the network of homestay hosts in August 2012. For him the sheer pleasure of welcoming guests and exchanging experiences is key. “The guest feels like he or she is awaited, anticipated. It doesn’t matter whether the house is luxurious or not. What matters is that sense of being welcome, of being at home,” he declares.

Both networks currently operating in the city plan to double the number of homestay residences on their books by the time Rio hosts the Olympic Games in 2016. Rio’s local government is supporting and incentivising this expansion on the basis that it’s good for everyone: carioca hosts, Brazilian tourists and, of course, international visitors.

detalhe

“Rio de Imagens” at MAR
Several different artists create a realistic portrait of the city

“Rio de Imagens” exhibit features pieces by Burle Marx, Iberê Camargo, Di Cavalcanti and Lasar Segall, to name only a few. The showcase is on display through July 28th at Rio’s Art Museum (MAR), creating a realistic portrait of the city through art. The pieces were created by artists focused on different styles and they include around 60 paintings, prints and panels, from the early 19th century to present day.

This exhibit, set up at MAR’s entry point, tells a constantly changing story, inspired by maps dating from 1700 and previously untouched watercolors and prints of Rio, all of which merge into historical documents and recent slums photographs. Tarsila do Amaral, Eliseu Visconti, Carlito Carvalhosa, Mauricio Dias & Walter Riedweg and Milton Dacosta are only a few of the great names that tell the history of a city that continues to grow, in an exhibit that helps us find its roots and trace its future.

Most pieces are not well known by the general public, as many of them belong to personal collections. The exhibition features Rio de Janeiro as seen by different forms and aesthetics. The highlights are three multimedia installations that help visitors imagine the city in its historical and affective dimensions.

Partial opening of Cidade das Artes

detalhe

Rock in Rio, one of the main events in the Brazilian music industry, is now the backdrop for a stage performance focused on the story of a Brazilian couple. The show was dubbed “Rock in Rio - O Musical”, and has been on stage since January 4th. This is one of the largest stage productions ever held in the country, and it is set to run in Rio until April 7th, followed by a season in Sao Paulo.

Hoping to appeal to people of all ages, the musical show features songs that were part of all editions of the festival, including international events and Rio’s four editions. Rock in Rio was created in 1985, and has since then brought hundreds of national and international artists to the city, giving all those present an opportunity to witness historical moments in the music industry.

“Rock in Rio- The Musical” hopes to celebrate eclecticism and the importance of Rock in Rio. This is mirrored by the chosen songs, which include “Poeira”, by Ivete Sangalo, “Isn’t She Lovely”, by Stevie Wonder, “Admirável Gado Novo”, by Zé Ramalho and “Paradise City", by Guns N'Roses. All these songs have become true anthems of Rock in Rio, as well as other hits like “Every breath you take”, by Sting, "Love of my Life", by Queen and "You've Got a Friend", by James Taylor, which are also part of the repertoire for this amazing musical.

The chosen venue for this stage performance is Grande Sala, at Cidade das Artes, Rio’s newest entertainment and leisure area comfortably houses 1800 people for now. Secretaria Municipal de Cultura is the organ in charge of Cidade das Artes, which is to remain partially open until March 4th. After this day, it will be officially opened, in a grand event that brings several artists together, establishing the venue as one of Rio de Janeiro’s largest cultural centers.

Rio is the best gay destination in the world!

detalhe

Elected as the best gay destination in the world, Rio de Janeiro now confirms, through many attractions, why it is worthy of such title. Besides its endless natural beauty, the city also counts on an extensive schedule focused on gay tourism, which, according to recently carried surveys, is the most prominent segment in the industry. Hotels, restaurants, bars and night-clubs, besides rental car services and cab services specialized in servicing LGBT tourists represent the biggest difference that makes Rio a receptive city by nature.

- That is yet another victory which comes to reiterate Rio de Janeiro’s vocation as one of the best touristic destinations in the world. Rio welcomes everyone with open arms and it would not be any different with LGBT public” – said Antônio Pedro Figueira de Melo, the Rio de Janeiro Tourism secretary after Rio was elected the best gay destination in the world, at a contest held by Logo channel, in MTV, and website Outtriptravel.

One fourth of the approximately three million foreign tourists that visit Rio every year belong to the LGBT segment. From that total, 75% are men, with ages ranging between 20 and 35 years old and who remain in the city for an average of five days. According to the Ministry of Tourism, a gay tourist will spend approximately US$ 200 per day, against the US$ 74 spent by a heterosexual tourist.

The numbers and visitors satisfaction only reinforce the image of Rio as one of the main touristic destinations in the world. To fashion designer Carlos Tufvesson, member of the State of Rio de Janeiro LGBT Council and of the Rio City Hall Guaranty of Rights Committee, one of the main factor which rendered it possible for Rio to win is the fact that the city welcomes its visitors very well, and also offers an extensive and varied choice of activities.

- Rio is one of the few cities in the world that is inclusive by nature, because it has an extensive array of activities focused on leisure and fun, particularly between the months of December and January, and those aspects are increasingly attractive to the LGBT segment.

Tufvesson also highlights how significant is the diversity of programs the city has to offer tourists. According to him, all places in the city today are gay friendly, due to law no. 2.475/1996, which does not allow discrimination in any commercial facilities. Therefore, people tend to get together much more because they share the same tastes – in music, food – rather than due to sexual orientation.

Among the places most visited by LGBT tourists are the quarter of Ipanema, with its countless bars and night-clubs, as well as the beach that is known as the most democratic in the world; Tijuca Forest – the world’s largest urban forest. The Sugar Loaf, Christ the Redeemer (selected as one of the wonders of the modern world) and the Botanic Garden are also to be highlighted. On Friday nights, one of the greatest symbols of Carioca bohemian life, the quarter of Lapa, gathers a vast number of Gay tourists, which are spread among the many bars and musical show theatres.

Electronic music parties are also among the most sought by LGBT tourists. The main events are “Moo” party, held in Centro (Downtown) and “Revolution”, which gathers DJs renowned all over the world. Each season the party is held at a different location, such as the Museum of Modern Art at Aterro do Flamengo, and “Armazém 5” (Warehouse 5) at Cais do Porto, in the city docks.

Still in accordance with a Carioca research institute (*), the main markets providing LGBT tourists are Europe and North America, which together represent 70% of the amount of visitors. Due to the fact that their standards are rated as “A”, they tend to stay in five star hotels, such as the Copacabana Palace, in Copacabana, Fasano, in Ipanema, Marina Palace, in Leblon and Santa Teresa Hotel, in the charming quarter with the same name.

- And this is only getting better: we gave our full support to the campaign for having Rio elected as the world’s best Gay destination and we want to continue serving well and improving the quality of services rendered to this segment of society – says the secretary of Tourism.

Restaurants such as “Gero”, in Ipanema, specialized in Italian cuisine; “Aprazível”, in Santa Teresa and “Garcia e Rodrigues”, in Leblon, are highly favoured by LGBT tourists visiting the city. Besides those, “Zazá”, in Ipanema and “Alessandro e Frederico”, in Leblon, are also much appreciated.

The city also offers actual consumerism temples, such as Shopping Leblon mall, in Zona Sul (the South Zone) and Barra Shopping mall, at Barra da Tijuca, which gather internationally known luxury brands such as Armani Exchange, Sara Chofakian, and places for leisure and entertainment, such as movie theatres with 3D technology, restaurants specialized in the most varied cooking styles as well as theatres.

Services specialized in this segment are becoming ever more frequent in the city, showing how important those tourists are. One of the best highlights is Nova Aliança cab services cooperative, specialized in transporting gays and lesbians, and which serves all of Rio, particularly the South Zone. Tourism Agency “Rio G”, in Ipanema, specialized in LGBT tourism, offers specific tourism packages which include visits to the city’s main touristic spots.

In order to guarantee the improvement on services rendered to tourists, the City Hall is already investing in manpower training and specialization, such as teaching foreign languages, specialized services for public of various age ranges and needs. The Tourism Secretariat also has a website (www,rioguiaoficial.com.br) displaying all activities available in the city, suggestions and an icon meant exclusively for LGBT viewers. The guide’s printed issue, which is published every two months, as of the special summer issue, shall display an icon only with programs focused on LGBT public.

MAR is the first major cultural space at Praça Mauá built within the project of revitalization of the Port Area. Rio de Janeiro is to be the museum’s a main exhibit theme. This exhibit aims to show a significant and historic collection of works produced by Brazilian plastic artists from the concrete and neo-concrete movement, from the 1950s and 1960. The exhibit also features pieces from the MAR collection, acquired or donated recently, such as São José de Botas , by Aleijadinho.

On the top floor of, exhibit “O Abrigo e o Terreno - Arte de Sociedade no Brasil” hopes to explore inclusion and exclusion relations in an urban context through the works of Antonio Dias, Antonio Manuel, Bispo do Rosario, Helio Oiticica, Lucia Koch, Lygia Clark, Lygia Pape, Marepe, Raul Mourao, and many more.

The cultural area includes eight showrooms divided over four floors in a 43 thousand square feet area. Parque Lage

detalhe
Enjoy the city withy kids

Spending the day at Parque Lage is one of the most enjoyable children’s tours in Rio de Janeiro. The park is located between Corcovado Hill and the Botanical Gardens, and picnic areas, lakes, gardens and trails are available, allowing for a relaxing family trip that explores the natural beauty of the park.

Start your day with a breakfast at Café du Lage, including fruit, warm bread, homemade jams and other delicacies. The place fills up quickly, so arrive early. After that, explore the mansion built around a pool and erected as a gift to Italian opera singer Gabriela Besanzoni and which now houses the School of Visual Arts of Parque Lage. The tiles, marbles and mosaics were created by students of the art school, and seem like the perfect spot for contemplation. Check out the fountain and its geometrical gardens, in front of the mansion, and then go for an afternoon picnic at the large grassy area. Finish your tour on a high note, by gazing at the spectacular views of Christ the Redeemer and the Atlantic Ocean.

The artificial caves feature fake stalactites descending from the ceiling and are another of Parque Lage’s highlight. Twelve aquariums with a few fish species were built into one of the cave’s walls. A playground with slides, swings and seesaws is available for younger children. For a perfect finish to a great day, trek up one of the trails that leads straight to Christ the Redeemer.

Version by Ron Daniels on show until April

detalhe

William Shakespeare’s widely interpreted play now gets a Brazilian version at the hands of director Ron Daniels. This new version of “Hamlet” features Thiago Lacerda as the young Danish prince, haunted by his doubts on whether he should honor his dead father’s will and kill his uncle. The show is on at Teatro Tom Jobim, at Jardim Botânico, until April 14th.

After a successful season in São Paulo, “Hamlet” comes to Rio de Janeiro with the responsibility of telling this timeless story written in the 17th century, covering issues like revenge, obsession and promises. Known Brazilian theatre actors like Antonio Petrin, Selma Egrei, Roney Facchini and Eduardo Semerjian are part of a cast of fifteen.

Director Ron Daniels is a drama veteran and a specialist in Shakespeare.  Daniels began his career in the late 60s, and after a long season in Great Britain, he won the title of associate director of the Royal Shakespeare Company. This is his third staging of Hamlet.
